QUICK ANSWER

A duplex softener can maintain a softened-water supply while one vessel regenerates, provided the resin capacity, valve arrangement and regeneration time suit the real operating cycle. Specify the hardness duty and acceptable leakage first, then verify that the standby vessel is genuinely ready when changeover occurs. Two tanks alone do not establish continuous availability.

01

State the softening duty and its limits

A conventional sodium-cycle softener exchanges hardness-forming ions for sodium. It is a hardness-control step rather than a complete desalination process, and it does not establish removal of every scale-forming constituent in the RO feed. Obtain a representative feed-water analysis and define the downstream hardness requirement with the RO designer. Include temperature, feed variability and relevant resin contaminants in the review. Confirm whether softening is the selected control route for this feed or whether another pretreatment method is more appropriate before requesting a twin-vessel package.

Write the specification around the industrial duty rather than a domestic softener catalogue rating. State normal and peak feed flow, expected hours of operation, minimum available pressure and the permitted interruption during changeover. Identify the sample point used for acceptance and the analytical method for hardness. If the RO requires a low residual hardness, confirm that the method can resolve that requirement. A result reported simply as zero may reflect the test kit's resolution, so procurement should agree what measurement evidence will demonstrate acceptable softened-water quality.

02

Calculate hardness load on a consistent basis

Use a consistent hardness basis throughout the sizing calculation. If hardness H is expressed in milligrams per litre as calcium carbonate and treated volume V is in cubic metres, their product is the hardness load in grams as calcium carbonate equivalent. This is a mass balance, not a universal resin sizing rule. Compare the required service-cycle load with the supplier's working exchange capacity at the proposed regeneration conditions. Do not use total theoretical resin capacity as though every portion were available before the specified leakage endpoint.

Ask the supplier to identify the feed analysis and regeneration assumptions behind the stated working capacity. Check the load for the highest credible hardness and the intended interval between regenerations. Include a practical reserve tied to the actual changeover and sampling strategy. A time-based regeneration schedule may fit a predictable load, while variable industrial demand often requires volume tracking plus a defined reserve. Either approach should explain how the plant avoids consuming the remaining service capacity while the second vessel is still completing regeneration or returning to readiness.

03

Size hydraulic duty independently of exchange capacity

Resin inventory determines part of the available exchange duty, but the vessel and flow arrangement also need a hydraulic review. Request the pressure drop and acceptable service-flow range for the selected resin, bed geometry and distribution system. Specify the required inlet and outlet pressure conditions at peak demand. Examine nozzle sizes, valve losses and the downstream pump's suction requirements together. A vessel selected only from a capacity calculation can still be unsuitable if its service hydraulics cause excessive restriction or poor distribution at the required operating flow.

Define what duplex means in the quotation. Twin alternating equipment normally uses one vessel in service and one regenerating or available; a parallel arrangement may use both vessels and has a different availability basis. If both vessels are required to meet peak demand, evaluate how the plant behaves during regeneration of either one. Ask for a mode table showing permitted flow in each state. Make sure the commercial promise of continuous service refers to the specified demand and water quality, rather than merely to the presence of two installed pressure vessels.

04

Verify regeneration water, salt and drainage interfaces

The regeneration sequence needs a documented supply of suitable water, brine preparation and a discharge route. Ask for the required flow, pressure, volume and duration of each regeneration step for the proposed resin and arrangement. Review the brine tank's usable inventory, salt loading access and preparation time. Salt quality and regenerant concentration must follow the resin supplier's requirements. The plant should have a clear method for recognizing an inadequate brine supply before an apparently regenerated vessel is accepted as ready for the next service cycle.

Check the drain as a utility interface, not an afterthought. Identify the expected discharge profile, maximum instantaneous flow and any backpressure limitation. Coordinate handling of spent brine with the facility's waste-management arrangements and the actual discharge requirements. Show separation from production-water piping and provide access for inspecting drain performance. Include the consequences of a blocked drain, low feed pressure or interrupted electrical supply during regeneration. These events should leave a visible incomplete-cycle condition rather than automatically labelling the vessel available after a timer has elapsed.

05

Write a deliberate changeover and readiness sequence

Require a valve sequence that isolates the regenerating vessel from the softened-water outlet. Show valve positions for service, backwash, brine contact, rinsing, standby and changeover on the process diagram. Document the response to an actuator failure or an uncertain valve position where that could connect untreated water or regenerant to the RO feed. Include a deliberate bypass policy. If a bypass is provided for maintenance, its state should be visible and controlled according to the downstream equipment's hardness requirement, rather than becoming an undocumented normal operating path.

Standby readiness should depend on completion of the required regeneration and rinse checks. Agree whether quality is confirmed by online monitoring, a controlled manual sample or both. Document how the controller handles power restoration in the middle of a cycle and whether operator acknowledgement is required. For a common outlet, review possible short transient quality changes during switching and define how they are detected or managed. A smooth hydraulic transition is useful, but it does not demonstrate that the newly selected vessel has the required remaining exchange capacity or acceptable outlet hardness.

06

Monitor hardness leakage and diagnose short runs

Provide accessible sample points on the feed and individual vessel outlets where practical. Trend treated volume, measured feed hardness, regeneration events and outlet hardness together. Select sampling frequency from the risk of breakthrough and the variability of the source water. Conductivity is useful for some operating observations, but sodium-cycle exchange does not make it a direct hardness measurement. If an online hardness analyzer is specified, include its measuring range, reagent needs, sample conditioning, maintenance and loss-of-signal response in the quotation and control narrative.

When service runs shorten, compare actual loading and regeneration evidence before assuming that additional resin is the only answer. Review salt supply, brine preparation, valve operation, rinse completion and the feed analysis. Check the resin supplier's guidance for suspected contaminants or changes in operating conditions. Distinguish insufficient capacity from hydraulic or regeneration problems because the corrective equipment scope differs. Retain records of the analytical method and sampling location so a change in test practice is not mistakenly interpreted as a change in the softener's engineering performance.

07

Turn the quotation into an acceptance and handover plan

The RFQ should include feed-water analysis, maximum service flow, working-cycle load, permitted hardness leakage, utilities and the required arrangement. Request the capacity basis, hydraulic calculations, material schedule, valve diagram, regeneration recipe and control description. Clarify the initial resin charge, brine equipment, instruments, spares and installation responsibilities. Compare bids at the same demand and regeneration assumptions. A larger vessel is not automatically a better purchase if it requires utilities unavailable at the site or a regeneration period incompatible with the plant's production schedule.

Site acceptance should record outlet hardness under agreed service conditions, pressure loss, actual regeneration completion and successful changeover. Identify any factory checks that cannot demonstrate the final feed-water duty and carry those items into commissioning. Train operators to verify readiness, investigate breakthrough and manage an interrupted regeneration. Send Baihuipu the water analysis, daily demand pattern, RO hardness requirement and available regeneration utilities for a duplex-softener review. A documented duty gives procurement a clear basis for comparing offers and gives operations a practical way to judge ongoing performance.

FAQ

Questions buyers commonly ask

Does a duplex softener always provide full flow during regeneration?+

Only if the vessel remaining in service can meet the required hydraulic and exchange duty. A parallel system relying on both vessels at peak flow has a different availability basis.

Can conductivity confirm softened-water hardness?+

Conductivity is not a direct hardness measurement for sodium-cycle softening. Use a hardness method with a range and resolution suitable for the downstream requirement.

Should resin sizing use theoretical or working capacity?+

Use documented working capacity at the proposed regeneration conditions and leakage endpoint, with a reserve appropriate to the actual service and changeover cycle.

What should happen after interrupted regeneration?+

The controls should identify the incomplete cycle and follow an agreed recovery procedure. Return the vessel to readiness only after the required regeneration and rinse checks are completed.
